Former President Goodluck Jonathan has encouraged Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara not to be discouraged by the ongoing political turmoil in the state.
Jonathan, who spoke at an event in the Nihi Community in Etche Local Government Area on Sunday, assured Fubara that he would ultimately rise above the challenges he is facing.
“I know you (Fubara) are going through challenges, and at times like this, I prefer to remain quiet,” Jonathan said. “But this is your first time holding a high political office. You will face many challenges, but remember, no one becomes a general without fighting wars.”
He continued, “Whatever you are experiencing now is preparing you to be a general in politics. With your dedication and the support of the people of Rivers State, God will see you through.”
Jonathan also emphasized the critical role of Rivers State in the Niger Delta region, warning that instability in the state could have far-reaching consequences for the entire nation.
“We need a peaceful Rivers State because it is the heart of the Niger Delta,” Jonathan explained. “Creating unrest in Rivers State leads to instability in the Niger Delta, which harms the nation’s economy. A peaceful Rivers is vital for the nation’s well-being.”
He further urged for unity and calm, stating, “Political office comes with tenure. We must allow those in power to do their work and, after their time, another person will take over. There’s no need for conflict over political positions.”
During the event, Jonathan was also honored with the traditional title of Eze Udo I of Etche by the Supreme Council of Etche Traditional Rulers.
Jonathan and Fubara attended the celebration marking the 10th anniversary of the coronation of the Onye Ishi Agwuru III of Ulakwo-Umuselem in Etche, Eze Nwala.
