Tinubu appoints Abel Enitan as new head of civil service

President Bola Tinubu has appointed Abel Olumuyiwa Enitan as the new Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, with the appointment taking effect on August 27, 2026.

The appointment was announced on Wednesday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

Enitan will succeed Didi Esther Walson-Jack, who is set to retire from the Federal Civil Service after attaining the statutory retirement age of 60.

A native of Osun State, Enitan currently serves as Permanent Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Education and is the most senior Permanent Secretary in the Federal Civil Service.

He has served as a Permanent Secretary for seven years and seven months, with postings to the Ministry of Police Affairs, Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and the Office of the Vice President.

His extensive experience across several key government institutions is expected to provide him with a broad understanding of the operations and challenges of the Federal Civil Service as he assumes the top administrative position.

Tinubu commended Walson-Jack for her contributions to the public service, particularly the reforms, innovations and other initiatives implemented during her tenure as Head of the Civil Service.

The President wished her a fulfilling life after public service and expressed appreciation for her years of dedicated service to the country.

Tinubu also tasked Enitan with building on ongoing reforms and strengthening professionalism, efficiency and innovation across the Civil Service.

He urged the incoming Head of Service to promote a professional, merit-based, accountable and responsive public service capable of advancing the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda and meeting the needs of Nigerians.

Enitan was born on December 12, 1966. He attended Ajibode Grammar School in Ibadan and the College of Arts and Science in Ile-Ife for his secondary education.

He subsequently studied at the University of Lagos, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance and Banking in 1988.

In 2015, he earned a Master of Science degree in Public Policy Analysis from Nasarawa State University, Lafia.
