Makinde declares 2027 presidential bid

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has officially declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election, signalling a major shift in Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the next general polls.

Makinde made the announcement on Thursday at a unity rally jointly organised by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All People’s Movement (APM) to formalise an alliance between both parties. The event was held at Mapo Hall in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Addressing supporters and political stakeholders, the governor called on opposition leaders across the country to unite against what he described as attempts by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to turn Nigeria into a one-party state.

According to Makinde, Nigeria’s democracy is under threat due to what he termed the shrinking political space for opposition parties and increasing interference by the ruling party.

He urged Nigerians to move beyond being “spectators and bystanders” in the political process, expressing confidence that active participation by eligible voters could bring about what he described as a “historic reset” in 2027.

“Is this the way we are to continue as a nation?” Makinde asked, while highlighting concerns over worsening economic hardship, insecurity, and growing pressure on opposition voices.

The rally attracted political allies, party faithful, and key stakeholders as political alignments ahead of the 2027 elections continue to gather momentum.

Makinde was first elected governor of Oyo State under the PDP in 2019 and secured re-election in 2023 on the same platform.

His declaration comes just days after Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed reportedly left the PDP for the APM and announced plans to contest for the Bauchi South Senatorial seat.
