The Lagos State Government has approved and released the 2026/2027 Harmonised Academic Calendar for public and private primary and secondary schools, with Monday, September 14, 2026, fixed as the resumption date for the new academic session.
The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Alli-Balogun, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, noting that the calendar was developed after consultations with education stakeholders through the Office of Education Quality Assurance.
According to the commissioner, the calendar was finalised after two stakeholders’ meetings where key dates and activities for the academic year were reviewed and agreed upon.
The approved schedule shows that the first term will run from Monday, September 14, 2026, to Monday, December 21, 2026, with a mid-term break scheduled for November 2 to November 6, 2026.
The second term will commence on Monday, January 11, 2027, and end on Monday, April 19, 2027, while the third term will run from Monday, May 3, 2027, to Friday, July 30, 2027. The session will have a total of 182 school days.
Alli-Balogun said the harmonised calendar reflects the state government’s commitment to improving education quality and ensuring a structured academic year. He urged all public and private schools to comply with the approved schedule.
The commissioner also noted that International Literacy Day will be observed on September 8, 2026, while the International Day of Education will be marked on January 24, 2027.
Under the new calendar, schools may select any two days between Monday, September 7, and Friday, September 11, 2026, for staff professional development, with the timing left to individual schools’ discretion.
The calendar also makes Open Day compulsory for schools, although each institution may determine the date. Public holidays remain mandatory and will be observed in line with directives from the Federal Government.
Schools operating international curricula that require adjustments outside the approved calendar have been directed to submit calendar flexibility applications on or before Friday, August 21, 2026.
