Spokesperson for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and lawyer Kenneth Okonkwo has described the party as the “surest path” to an Igbo presidency, alleging that former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi is working against that goal.
Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Thursday, Okonkwo claimed Obi’s actions had undermined efforts to secure an Igbo presidency.
“Peter Obi is the one who is now working against Igbo presidency and vice presidency because he came to the ADC on his own, and he said he was going to contest under the ADC, and he left about just one week to the close of time,” he said.
Obi, who is the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has yet to respond to Okonkwo’s claims.
Okonkwo said the emergence of former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi as Atiku’s running mate for the 2027 presidential election further strengthened his belief that the ADC offers the best opportunity for an Igbo to attain the presidency.
“I am talking about geopolitical balancing because Amaechi is Igbo; he is already the vice presidential candidate. And that is why I am saying that is what makes me even more favourably disposed that ADC is the surest path to Igbo presidency,” he said.
The lawyer added that he had no objection to Amaechi’s emergence as Atiku’s running mate, maintaining that the former Rivers governor is Igbo and would become Nigeria’s vice president if the ADC wins the 2027 presidential election.
