Flying Eagles beat Senegal, advance to U-20 AFCON semifinals

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles have booked a spot in the semi-finals of the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after a dramatic 3-1 penalty shootout win over defending champions Senegal on Monday.

The quarter-final clash at the Suez Canal Stadium in Egypt ended goalless after regulation and extra time, forcing the match into penalties where the Nigerians held their nerve to emerge victorious.

The win not only sent Nigeria into the last four but also secured them a place at the FIFA U-20 World Cup scheduled to be held in Chile later this year.

Despite dominating large spells of the match, Coach Aliyu Zubairu’s team failed to break down Senegal’s resolute defence. The Flying Eagles entered the game unbeaten in the group stage, though their lack of cutting edge in front of goal—especially during a frustrating draw with already-eliminated Kenya—had raised questions.

In the shootout, Nigeria converted three of their four spot-kicks through Precious Benjamin, Emmanuel Chukwu, and Israel Ayuma. Goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt emerged the hero, saving two penalties, while Senegal’s Ousmane Konaté struck the crossbar. Only Seydi Diouck managed to convert for the Young Lions of Teranga.

The result moves Nigeria a step closer to an eighth U-20 AFCON title—a record in the tournament’s history.

Speaking after the game, Coach Zubairu praised his team’s composure under pressure.

“We prepared for all scenarios, including penalties. I’m proud of the boys for executing when it mattered most,” he said.

The Flying Eagles will face the winner of the quarter-final between South Africa and DR Congo in the semi-final.
