A man and his son have died, while three other people sustained injuries in a road crash at Sabon Barki in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State on Sunday evening.
The crash, which occurred at about 4:20 pm, involved a commercial tricycle, popularly known as Keke NAPEP, conveying a family returning from church.
An eyewitness, Kefas Gyang, who confirmed the incident to The Telegraph in Jos on Sunday, said the tricycle caught fire after being hit by another vehicle.
According to Gyang, the victims’ mother sustained a broken leg, while two other children and the tricycle rider were rushed to the hospital for treatment.
“I was passing by on my way from work when I saw people crying. I went closer to find out what had happened and saw people trying to rescue the victims.
“But the fire was too much for us to handle. It was beyond our strength, and we could not do much to rescue them from the burning tricycle,” he said.
Gyang clarified that he did not witness the actual collision.
“When the other vehicle hit the Keke, I was not there. I only came across the scene afterwards and saw people crying,” he added.
The eyewitness further alleged that the driver of the other vehicle fled the scene after the crash.
The Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps in Plateau State, Peter Longsan, also confirmed the fatalities, saying two male victims were trapped under the vehicle.
“The accident was a bad one. Two persons died — a male adult and another male. They were trapped under the vehicle. The bus driver who caused the accident ran away. It is rather unfortunate,” Longsan said.
He urged motorists to exercise caution and obey traffic regulations to prevent road crashes.
In a related incident, one person died while three others sustained serious injuries in a road crash along the Coastal Road inward Eko Hotel in Lagos on October 2.
The Director of the Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Adebayo Taofiq, said a grey Lexus Jeep with registration number LSD 554 KV reportedly lost control, collided with a roadside pole and overturned.
