State governors are considering measures to reduce transportation fares across the country through the proposed National Affordable CNG Transit Programme (NACTP).
The proposal was discussed at the third meeting of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), held on Wednesday in Abuja.
The meeting, attended by several governors and deputy governors, was chaired by the NGF Chairman and Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.
According to a statement issued by AbdulRazaq, the Forum received a presentation on the proposed NACTP, a state-led initiative aimed at translating the lower operating costs of compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles into reduced transport fares for commuters.
The proposed programme would involve state support for CNG vehicle conversions, vehicle fleets and related infrastructure, alongside fare commitments from participating transport operators. An indicative target is to reduce passenger fares through lower operating costs.
The governors acknowledged the initiative’s potential to ease transportation costs for Nigerians and agreed to further examine its financing and implementation framework.
The Forum also deliberated on other issues affecting the country, including a presentation by the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Jumoke Oduwole, on opportunities for states to participate in CANEX Weekend 2026 and the Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF) 2027, both scheduled to take place in Lagos.
The governors noted the potential of the platforms to showcase investment-ready projects, promote local exports and tourism, and connect state-based micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) with African and international investors and buyers.
“The Forum assured the Honourable Minister of its support in achieving these objectives,” the statement said.
Governors who attended the meeting included Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum, Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri, Cross River State Governor Bassey Otu, Jigawa State Governor Umar Namadi, Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule.
Deputy governors from Katsina, Yobe, Niger and Oyo states were also represented at the meeting.
