The lifeless bodies of twin babies were discovered in a drainage channel along Cooperative Street in the Nwokedi area of Okpoko, Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State.
Residents said the infants were found on Sunday morning by passersby, wrapped in baby clothing and placed inside a box. The discovery was immediately reported to officers of the Okpoko Police Division.
A resident, identified simply as Uche, who was among the first to witness the scene, condemned the incident and described it as deeply disturbing.
“This is shameful and should never be encouraged. How can someone do such a thing at a time when there are many orphanages and support systems available?” she said.
Another eyewitness speculated that the babies may have been abandoned by a woman who was unwilling or unable to take responsibility for their care.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the biological parents of the infants had been identified and arrested.
According to him, the suspects are currently in police custody and assisting investigators in determining the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the twins.
Ikenga said the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Ikioye Orutugu, described the incident as a disturbing violation of the sanctity of human life and condemned it in strong terms.
He noted that police operatives attached to the Okpoko Divisional Headquarters received a report in the early hours of Sunday about the discovery of the infants’ bodies in the drainage channel.
“Following the report, operatives immediately swung into action, secured the scene, gathered vital evidence and commenced investigations,” Ikenga stated.
He added that preliminary investigations led to the identification and arrest of the biological parents shortly after the incident was reported.
“The Commissioner of Police commended the swift response and professionalism of the officers involved in the investigation. He reiterated that every child deserves protection, care and the opportunity to live,” the statement said.
Orutugu also assured residents that anyone found culpable would face the full weight of the law.
Police said investigations are ongoing and that further details will be made available as the case progresses.
