The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has cleared former Cross River State Governor Donald Duke as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Duke’s clearance followed the conclusion of a review of the party’s recently conducted primaries by its Primaries Appeal Committee and the subsequent adoption of the committee’s report by the NWC.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Muhammed Ishaq, disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday in Abuja.
Ishaq said the NWC also upheld the outcomes of the party’s governorship, Senate, House of Representatives, and State House of Assembly primaries.
He added that all candidates who emerged from the primaries were cleared to contest in the 2027 general elections, except for the candidate for Tarauni Federal Constituency in Kano State, where the primary election was nullified.
According to him, the PRP will field a total of 420 candidates across various elective positions in the 2027 polls.
“In line with our commitment to active participation in the electoral process, the PRP is proud to field a total of 420 candidates across all positions in the 2027 general elections,” Ishaq said.
He reaffirmed the party’s commitment to internal democracy, good governance, and the delivery of credible and transformative leadership for Nigeria.
Earlier in May, the PRP screened and cleared three aspirants to contest its presidential primary as part of preparations for the 2027 elections.
The aspirants included Donald Duke, renowned economist Dr. Nnaoke Ufere of Abia State, and former African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Yakubu Mohammed Kingsley from Edo State.
Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Friday warned political parties that any primary election conducted outside its May 30 deadline would be considered invalid unless overturned by a higher court.
The commission said its position was based on an earlier judgment of the Federal High Court on the conduct of party primaries.
