Antoine Semenyo produced a moment of brilliance to hand Manchester City a 1-0 victory over Chelsea in the FA Cup final at Wembley Stadium on Saturday.

In a tense and largely scrappy contest, Semenyo delivered the decisive moment in the 72nd minute with an audacious back-heel finish from close range, expertly guiding Erling Haaland’s cross into the far corner.

The spectacular strike secured City’s eighth FA Cup title and their second domestic trophy of the season following their League Cup triumph over Arsenal in March.

Semenyo’s improvised finish instantly earned a place among the competition’s memorable final goals, alongside iconic strikes from players such as Ricky Villa, Michael Owen, Roberto Di Matteo and Steven Gerrard.

The 26-year-old Ghana international, who joined City from Bournemouth during the January transfer window, delivered the winning moment not far from where he was born, close to Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge home in west London.

The victory also ended City’s run of back-to-back FA Cup final defeats to Crystal Palace and Manchester United, while adding another trophy to the glittering managerial career of Pep Guardiola.

Guardiola has now won 20 trophies during his decade in charge of City, including FA Cup triumphs in 2019 and 2023. Despite their cup success, City remain locked in a tense Premier League title race.

Currently on a 21-match unbeaten domestic run, Guardiola’s side could move within two points of league leaders Arsenal with victory over Bournemouth in their penultimate league fixture, though Arsenal would still control the title race.

Speculation over Guardiola’s future also continues to swirl, with the Spaniard entering the final year of his contract and yet to clarify whether he will remain at the club beyond the season.

For Chelsea, the defeat marked another setback in a disappointing campaign. Without a league win in seven matches and sitting ninth in the table, the London club faces an uphill battle to secure European football next season.

Under interim manager Calum McFarlane, Chelsea produced a disciplined defensive display but struggled to create meaningful attacking opportunities. Frustrated supporters protested against the club’s owners, BlueCo, before kick-off and repeatedly chanted “we want our Chelsea back” during the match.

City dominated possession throughout much of the game but initially struggled to break down Chelsea’s five-man defence. Haaland went close on several occasions, while Semenyo missed an earlier opportunity shortly after halftime when he headed over from close range.

Chelsea also had moments of controversy, appealing unsuccessfully for a penalty before the interval after Joao Pedro appeared to be brought down by Abdukodir Khusanov.

However, City finally found the breakthrough when Haaland burst down the right side of the penalty area and cut the ball back for Semenyo, whose instinctive back-heel finish settled the final in stunning fashion.
