Former Kano State governor, Ibrahim Shekarau, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) after weeks of consultations with political allies.
Shekarau announced the move on Sunday at his residence in Kano, where he was joined by PDP chieftain, Senator Bello Gwarzo, alongside supporters and loyalists.
Addressing the gathering, the former governor said the decision followed careful consideration of available political options. He also sought the views of those present, asking whether they endorsed the move, and received unanimous approval, signalling broad support for his defection.
Shekarau served as governor of Kano State from 2003 to 2011 and later as Minister of Education from 2014 to 2015.
APC welcomes move
Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has welcomed Shekarau’s return to the APC, describing it as a significant boost to the party’s strength in the state.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, Yusuf said a date would be set in consultation with the party’s national secretariat for Shekarau’s formal reception into the APC.
He said the party in Kano had continued to gain momentum and consolidation, positioning itself as a dominant political force in the state.
Yusuf added that the APC remained confident ahead of upcoming elections, citing internal unity and strategic realignments as key factors behind its growing strength.
