Team Nigeria ended the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, as one of the competition’s standout performers, finishing seventh on the final medals table with an impressive haul of 24 medals.
Nigeria won 10 gold, seven silver and seven bronze medals, emerging as the highest-ranked African nation at the Games and securing a place among the top 10 countries overall.
The final standings were confirmed by the official X account of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games after the conclusion of events on Sunday evening.
Esther Nworgu delivered Nigeria’s first gold medal of the Games with a dominant performance in the women’s lightweight para powerlifting event.
Other Nigerian athletes who contributed to the country’s medal success included Ezekiel Nathaniel, who won gold in the men’s 400m hurdles; Goodness Nwachukwu, who broke her own world record to claim gold; Idris Rilwan, who triumphed in the men’s para powerlifting event; and Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, who made history in the men’s shot put.
Tobi Amusan, Nigeria’s leading track star, also battled through injury to secure a bronze medal in the women’s 100m hurdles.
Australia tops medal table
Australia finished at the summit of the medals table with 171 medals, comprising 70 gold, 45 silver and 56 bronze.
England placed second with 110 medals — 29 gold, 45 silver and 36 bronze — while Canada secured third position with 62 medals, made up of 19 gold, 20 silver and 23 bronze.
India and hosts Scotland completed the top five, both finishing with 39 medals. Scotland narrowly missed out on fourth place after India recorded a higher number of silver medals.
New Zealand finished sixth with 36 medals (10 gold, 14 silver and 12 bronze), just ahead of Nigeria.
Nigeria’s seventh-place finish was powered by its 10 gold medals, which helped it maintain its position as the best-performing African country at the Games.
Jamaica placed eighth with 19 medals, followed by Wales in ninth with 31 medals and Malaysia in 10th with 16 medals.
South Africa finished 11th with 28 medals (seven gold, 11 silver and 10 bronze), while Northern Ireland placed 12th with 16 medals. Kenya ended its campaign in 13th position with 12 medals, comprising three gold, four silver and five bronze.
Cyprus also won 12 medals but finished 14th after recording one gold, five silver and six bronze medals.
Mauritius placed 15th with four medals, while Cameroon finished 16th with five medals.
Jersey, Samoa and Sri Lanka shared 17th place after each nation won one gold and one silver medal, while Fiji completed the top 20 with one gold and one bronze medal.
Among the other African nations, Uganda finished 27th with three medals, Namibia placed 29th with three medals, and Ghana ended 30th with two medals.
Lesotho and Zambia each finished with two bronze medals, while Gabon claimed a solitary bronze medal to complete the list of African medal winners at the Games.
Nigeria’s performance in Glasgow marked one of its strongest Commonwealth Games campaigns, with its 10 gold medals underlining the country’s dominance among African nations at the competition.
