Five men reportedly died in the early hours of Saturday after a Toyota Camry and an Iveco truck collided at Sawmill, near Mowo Bus Stop, along the Badagry Expressway in Lagos.

The Toyota Camry, with registration number FKJ 630KS, and the Iveco truck, with registration number T28081 LA, were involved in the fatal crash, according to a statement by the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu.

LASEMA said it received a distress call about the accident at 5:16 a.m. and immediately activated its Dolphin Team from the Igando Base.

On arrival at the scene, the emergency responders found that the two vehicles had been involved in a head-on collision.

Preliminary findings indicated that the crash was caused by excessive speed and reckless driving by the Toyota Camry driver, who reportedly lost control of the vehicle, veered into the opposite lane and collided head-on with the oncoming truck.

“Regrettably, the impact of the collision resulted in the death of five adult males who were occupants of the Toyota Camry,” Oke-Osanyintolu said.

He added that the remains of the victims were recovered and handed over to officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) for further necessary action.

The multi-agency response operation involved personnel from LASEMA’s Dolphin Team, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the FRSC and officers of the Nigeria Police Force from the Morogbo Division.

To restore normal traffic flow, two tow trucks were deployed to remove the damaged vehicles from the expressway.

LASEMA said the recovery operation was successfully completed, with both vehicles taken to the Morogbo Police Division. The affected section of the road was subsequently cleared and reopened to traffic.

Oke-Osanyintolu commiserated with the families of the deceased and urged motorists to avoid speeding, dangerous overtaking and other reckless driving practices, particularly during the early morning hours.

“Road safety is a shared responsibility, and adherence to traffic regulations remains critical to saving lives on Lagos roads,” he said.

LASEMA also reaffirmed its commitment to prompt emergency response and inter-agency collaboration to protect lives and property across the state.
