The Edo State Police Command has begun investigating a violent assault at Igbinedion Secondary School after a video showing the incident went viral on social media.
In the footage, two students were seen repeatedly beating, kicking, and dragging a boy believed to be in a junior class across the floor. One attacker used a belt, while another stomped on the victim’s chest, leaving him crying in visible pain. The boy’s screams could be heard as another student, believed to be recording the incident, pleaded with the attackers to stop. The motive for the assault is currently unclear.
In a statement on Sunday, the Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, Eno Ikoedem, confirmed that the authorities are aware of the disturbing footage.
“The Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, fdc, has directed the Divisional Police Officer in charge of the area to visit the school and commence a detailed inquiry into the matter,” Ikoedem said.
She added that, “Notwithstanding the action taken by the school, the Edo State Police Command has commenced a comprehensive investigation into the incident. The Command assures the public that the perpetrators involved in the bullying incident will be arrested and made to face the law accordingly, in line with their ages and legal provisions.”
The school management reportedly expelled the students involved as part of its disciplinary measures, according to Ikoedem.
While condemning acts of bullying, violence, or intimidation among students, the Command emphasized that anyone found culpable will be held accountable under the law.
The spokesperson also urged the public to remain calm and provide credible information to assist the ongoing investigation.
