The Edo State Government on Tuesday dismissed media reports about recent disturbances in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area, describing them as part of a coordinated attempt to misinform the public and destabilize the state.
In a statement signed by Patrick Ebojele, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo, the government clarified that the incident was not a protest but a “well-organized riot sponsored by a Nigerian resident in Russia and other locations overseas.”
According to the statement, security agencies have identified the suspected masterminds, who allegedly coordinated the unrest across Ekpoma, Auchi, Irrua, and even the Government House in Benin City, using funds from the diaspora.
“The government firmly refutes claims that those arrested in connection with the violence were students of Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, or that the arrests occurred in student hostels,” the statement said. It added that AAU was closed at the time, with all students having vacated the hostels well before the incident.
The arrested individuals were intercepted while allegedly attempting to vandalize campus property, and some were identified in viral videos showing acts of arson. Most arrests, the government said, were supported by clear evidence, including video footage.
“The suspects arrested are rioters, not peaceful protesters,” the statement emphasized, adding that the incident has no connection to AAU students or the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).
The government also debunked another viral video falsely depicting a kidnapping in Ekpoma, describing it as a “gross misrepresentation” intended to spread fear and tarnish the administration’s image.
Edo State further suggested that “opposition elements,” possibly with foreign backing, are fueling the unrest to discredit the government and create chaos.
While reaffirming its commitment to protecting lives and property, the government stressed that peaceful protest is a constitutional right, but violence, rioting, vandalism, and looting will not be tolerated.
Residents of Ekpoma were assured that the situation is under control and urged to ignore fake videos and unverified reports, remain calm, and continue their lawful activities.
