The Delta State Police Command has arrested Asaba-based content creator Ifeanyi Ogbonna, popularly known as “Odogwu of Asaba”, over allegations of raping a 20-year-old woman who later died.
The Command said the arrest followed a petition alleging that the woman travelled to Asaba on June 1, 2026, after Ogbonna invited her to participate in a content creation training programme he had advertised on his social media platforms.
According to the police, the suspect allegedly lodged the young woman in a hotel, where he is accused of sexually assaulting and physically attacking her.
Police said the woman later returned home in a distressed condition and reported the alleged incident to her parents.
The Command further disclosed that before her death, the woman recorded a video in which she recounted her experience and described the emotional trauma she allegedly suffered after the incident.
According to the police, she subsequently ingested a toxic substance in an apparent suicide attempt and later died despite efforts to save her.
Confirming the arrest in a statement, the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, said the Commissioner of Police, Olufemi Abaniwonda, directed an immediate and comprehensive investigation into the allegations.
“Upon receipt of the petition, the Commissioner of Police directed the Area Command Effurun to carry out a thorough investigation into the allegations. Acting on the directive, operatives swiftly commenced an investigation, leading to the arrest of Ifeanyi Ogbonna, also known as ‘Odogwu of Asaba’,” Edafe said.
He added that the suspect had made “useful statements” during preliminary interrogation, while investigations are continuing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the case.
Edafe also quoted the Commissioner of Police as assuring the deceased’s family and the public that the investigation would be thorough and impartial, adding that no aspect of the allegations would be overlooked.
