Manchester City have confirmed the signing of Italy international goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris Saint-Germain, completing the deal just one day after the summer transfer window closed.

The 26-year-old joins the Premier League champions on a five-year contract for a reported fee of £26 million ($35 million). He will wear the number 99 shirt at the Etihad Stadium.

Donnarumma arrives as a high-profile replacement for Ederson, who has departed for Turkish side Fenerbahce in a move reportedly worth £12 million, ending an illustrious eight-year spell in Manchester.

Donnarumma played a key role in PSG’s Champions League-winning campaign last season and was named Player of the Tournament at Euro 2020, where he helped Italy to the title. However, his absence from PSG’s Super Cup squad signaled his exit, especially following the club’s acquisition of Lille goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier.

“To have signed for Manchester City is such a special and proud moment for me,” said Donnarumma. “I’m joining a squad full of world-class talent and a team led by one of the greatest managers in football history in Pep Guardiola. This is a club every player dreams of playing for.”

Standing at 1.96 metres (6 feet 5 inches), Donnarumma began his senior career at AC Milan, debuting as a 16-year-old. He joined PSG in 2021 and has since made 412 club appearances and earned 74 international caps for Italy.

City’s Director of Football, Hugo Viana, hailed the signing as a major boost for the club following a shaky start to the new season.

“Gianluigi’s pedigree and experience speak for themselves. We are absolutely thrilled to welcome him to City,” said Viana. “He knows what it takes to win at the highest level, and his presence will only strengthen our squad.”

As City welcome a new number one, they also bid farewell to one of their most iconic players. Ederson, 32, leaves the club after six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, and a Champions League crown in 2023. Known for revolutionising the goalkeeper role under Guardiola with his pinpoint distribution, he made 372 appearances in all competitions, keeping 122 clean sheets in the league.

“You helped us make history,” City posted on social media, alongside a series of images of Ederson celebrating major trophies.

In an emotional farewell, Ederson reflected on his time at the club: “I arrived in Manchester eight years ago full of hope, but I could not have predicted such a beautiful time together.
Playing for City has been the most special period of my life, and I’ll always remain a fan of this amazing club.”

“I’m leaving with my wife and children, but I’m also leaving behind a big family.”

City also brought in James Trafford from Burnley earlier in the window, though the young English goalkeeper has struggled to impress in his early appearances.

Meanwhile, Swiss defender Manuel Akanji has joined Inter Milan on a season-long loan, further reshaping Guardiola’s squad as the champions aim to bounce back from an unsteady start to the season.
