NiMET forecasts three-day rain, thunderstorms from Monday

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a new three-day weather forecast, warning of thunderstorms and varying rainfall intensities across major regions of the country from Monday, July 21, to Wednesday, July 23, 2025.

The forecast, released on NiMet’s official X platform, predicts unsettled weather with storms, moderate rains, and strong winds affecting the Northern, Central, and Southern parts of Nigeria.

NiMet anticipates thunderstorms and rain starting Monday morning over parts of Taraba, Adamawa, Kebbi, Borno, Yobe, Gombe, Bauchi, Sokoto, and Kaduna states. The Central region is expected to experience cloudy mornings with increasing chances of thunderstorms as the day progresses. On Sunday, isolated thunderstorms were predicted over Niger State in the early hours, followed by rainfall and storms in Plateau, Nasarawa, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Kogi, Benue, and Niger.

By Monday morning, light rains and thunderstorms are forecast across Plateau, Benue, and Nasarawa states, with moderate rains expected later in the day over Plateau, Niger, the FCT, and Nasarawa. Tuesday’s mornings will remain mostly cloudy, with moderate rainfall predicted from afternoon to evening across the FCT, Plateau, Niger, and Kwara. On Wednesday, morning thunderstorms and rain are forecast for Katsina, Kano, Bauchi, Sokoto, and Taraba, with further storms expected later in Yobe, Jigawa, Kaduna, Borno, and Kebbi. Central states including the FCT, Plateau, Niger, and Kwara will see cloudy mornings and moderate rainfall during the afternoons and evenings.

In the South, morning rains are expected in Enugu, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom, followed by moderate to heavy rainfall over Ebonyi, Abia, Edo, Ondo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom throughout the forecast period. Northern regions began Sunday with thunderstorms and rain in parts of Taraba, Adamawa, Kebbi, Sokoto, and Kaduna, while other areas experienced sunny skies with clouds. Afternoon and evening storms were expected to affect Adamawa, Taraba, Kebbi, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Katsina, Kano, Zamfara, Kaduna, and Yobe.

Monday morning should bring mostly sunny skies with cloud patches, but later storms and moderate rains are anticipated in Bauchi, Gombe, Yobe, Jigawa, Adamawa, Taraba, Kano, Katsina, and Kaduna. Thunderstorm activity will return Tuesday morning across Katsina, Kano, Bauchi, Sokoto, and Taraba, with additional rain and storms in Yobe, Jigawa, Kaduna, Bauchi, Borno, and Kebbi during the evening.

Southern states are expected to experience cloudy mornings throughout the three days. Light rains were forecast for Sunday afternoon in Imo, Abia, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom. Monday will see clouds and possible rain in Akwa Ibom and Cross River, extending to moderate rains across Ondo, Imo, Enugu, Anambra, Abia, Edo, Rivers, Cross River, Delta, Akwa Ibom, and Bayelsa in the afternoon and evening. Tuesday will begin with showers in Enugu, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom, followed by moderate to heavy rains later across Ebonyi, Abia, Edo, Ondo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom.

NiMet cautioned that strong winds may precede rainfall, especially in areas prone to thunderstorms. The agency advised the public to secure loose objects, avoid driving in heavy rain, disconnect electrical appliances during storms, and stay away from tall trees to avoid injury from falling branches. Airline operators were urged to obtain airport-specific weather updates for flight planning, while residents were encouraged to stay informed through NiMet’s official channels and website, www.nimet.gov.ng.
