Defending champions Argentina secured a World Cup semi-final clash against England after Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez struck in extra time to seal a 3-1 victory over Switzerland on Saturday.

The South Americans survived a tense quarter-final encounter after Alexis Mac Allister gave them the lead and Dan Ndoye levelled for the Swiss, who were reduced to 10 men following Breel Embolo’s second-half dismissal.

Alvarez finally broke the deadlock in extra time with a superb curling effort before Martinez sealed Argentina’s place in the last four with a close-range finish.

The victory sets up a mouthwatering semi-final between Argentina and England as Lionel Messi’s side continue their bid to become the first team since Brazil in 1962 to win back-to-back World Cup titles.
