Egypt secured the first FIFA World Cup win in their history with a 3-1 victory over New Zealand on Sunday, boosting their chances of reaching the knockout stage for the first time.
Goals from Mohamed Salah, Mostafa Zico and Trezeguet helped the Pharaohs come from behind after Finn Surman had given New Zealand an early lead in the Group G clash in Vancouver.
The result sends Egypt to the top of Group G with four points, leaving them needing only a draw against Iran in Seattle on Friday to book a place in the Round of 32.
Salah inspired the turnaround in the second half. After exchanging passes with Zico — named after the Brazilian football icon — the Liverpool forward curled a left-footed effort into the net in the 67th minute to put Egypt ahead.
The Egyptian captain then turned provider, setting up substitute Trezeguet — named after former France striker David Trezeguet — who sealed the victory with a low header late in the game.
“In years to come, we will remember this as one of the greatest achievements in our history,” Salah said after the match.
The forward also praised the passionate Egyptian support in the stands.
“It felt like we were playing in Egypt. It was a great win and a fantastic atmosphere,” he added.
Egypt had fallen behind in the 15th minute when Surman rose highest to power home a header for New Zealand.
However, Mostafa Zico restored parity before the break, heading in a cross from Mohamed Hany to set Egypt on course for a memorable victory.
In the group’s other match, Belgium and Iran played out a goalless draw.
Belgium will take on New Zealand in Vancouver on Friday, while Egypt face Iran in a decisive encounter in Seattle.
