The presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 election, Atiku Abubakar, has sympathised with residents affected by the recent flooding in Lagos State.
In a statement posted on his X account on Tuesday, Atiku expressed concern over the impact of the flooding on families, commuters, motorists and business owners whose lives and livelihoods were disrupted.
“I extend my heartfelt sympathy to the people of Lagos who have been affected by the ongoing flooding. My thoughts are with the families, motorists, commuters, business owners and everyone whose lives and livelihoods were disrupted by this unfortunate event,” he said.
The former vice president said the flooding underscored the importance of unity and compassion during difficult times.
“At moments like this, we are reminded of the strength of our shared humanity and the importance of standing together in support of one another.
“I pray for the safety of all and for a swift return to normalcy,” he added.
His message comes after torrential rainfall that began on Sunday triggered flash floods across several parts of Lagos, including Gbagada, Iyana Ipaja, Ikorodu Road, Ikeja, Maryland, Mushin, Ogudu, Lekki, Oshodi, Agege, Alimosho and Obalende.
The flooding also affected sections of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, Apapa-Oshodi Expressway and Lekki-Epe Expressway, causing severe traffic congestion and disrupting movement across the state.
Authorities have attributed the flooding to intense seasonal rainfall that overwhelmed drainage systems in several areas.
