Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s husband, Hafidh Ameir Hassan, died on Monday while receiving treatment at a hospital in Zanzibar, a government official said.
Hassan, 77, died early Monday at Mzena Hospital in Zanzibar, where he was being treated for a heart condition, Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi said.
In a short video posted on the Tanzanian presidency’s X account, Ndejembi expressed his condolences and said funeral preparations were under way in Kizimkazi, in southern Zanzibar.
A private figure, Ameir Hassan married Samia Hassan in 1978. The couple had four children, two of whom are also prominent public figures.
Their daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, is a Tanzanian lawmaker representing a constituency in Zanzibar.
Their son, Abdul Halim Hafidh Ameir, has also played a prominent role alongside his mother despite holding no official government title. In late August, he was received in Uganda by President Yoweri Museveni after accompanying the Tanzanian president on a state visit to Russia in June.
Samia Hassan became president in 2021 following the death of John Magufuli, whose government was widely criticised for its authoritarian rule.
She secured 98 per cent of the vote in last year’s presidential election, which was criticised by international observers amid a deadly crackdown on opposition protests.
The opposition has accused security forces of killing more than 2,000 people during the unrest surrounding the 2025 elections, allegations the government has disputed.
