Rangers International F.C. further cemented their place in Nigerian football history after defeating Ikorodu City F.C. 2–1 to clinch a record-equalling ninth Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title.
Captain Chidiebere Nwobodo scored in each half to inspire the Flying Antelopes to a decisive victory, sealing the championship ahead of closest rivals Rivers United F.C.
Rangers took control of the contest with Nwobodo’s brace before the hosts reduced the deficit in the 58th minute through substitute Moses Ali, following a goalkeeping error by Lucky Jimoh, who failed to properly handle a long-range strike.
The Enugu-based side finished the season at the top of the table with 68 points from 38 matches, narrowly edging Rivers United, who defeated Katsina United F.C. 3–0 in their final game of the campaign.
The title marks a major milestone for Rangers, as it levels the all-time NPFL championship record of nine titles held by regional rivals Enyimba F.C.
It also represents coach Fidelis Ilechukwu’s second league triumph with the club, further strengthening his growing legacy at Rangers.
By virtue of their title-winning campaign, Rangers and runners-up Rivers United will represent Nigeria in next season’s CAF Champions League.
