Bandits kill 11, injure two in Katsina community

Eleven people have been killed and two others injured in a fresh suspected bandit attack on Gurbi community in Kankara Local Government Area of Katsina State.

The injured victims are receiving treatment at a nearby hospital, while the bodies of the deceased have been released to their families for burial according to Islamic rites.

The Katsina State Police Command said the attack occurred at about 2:40 p.m. on April 26, 2026, when armed assailants stormed the village and opened fire on residents before the arrival of security operatives.

Police spokesman Abubakar Sadiq said that, following a distress call, a joint security team comprising police, military personnel, and other agencies, led by the Divisional Police Officer, was swiftly deployed to the scene.

According to him, the attackers fled upon sighting advancing security forces, adding that normalcy has since been restored to the community.

He said the Commissioner of Police, Ali Fage, has deployed additional tactical teams to the area to prevent further attacks. He also directed intensified intelligence-led patrols and stronger collaboration between security agencies and local stakeholders.

The command expressed condolences to the families of the victims and assured residents that efforts were underway to apprehend and prosecute those responsible.

It also urged members of the public to remain calm and provide useful information to aid ongoing investigations.

The latest attack adds to a wave of violent incidents across parts of Katsina and other northern states in recent days.

On Sunday, gunmen killed at least 29 people in an attack on Guyaku and Telabala communities in Gombi Local Government Area of Adamawa State, where attackers also disrupted a football match before opening fire on residents.
