OpenAI unveils image generation feature in ChatGPT

OpenAI, the AI startup behind ChatGPT, has integrated image generation directly into the chatbot, allowing users to create and modify images using GPT-4o, the company announced in a blog post on Tuesday. This update marks a significant step toward making image creation a central feature of AI-driven communication.

The integration, which builds on DALL·E’s existing capabilities, enhances the accuracy of AI-generated visuals, particularly in rendering text and intricate details. OpenAI showcased a sample image on its website to highlight the improved text accuracy compared to previous models.

While ChatGPT has long been able to generate images, this latest update streamlines the process, likely making it faster and more interactive, with additional features like inpainting. OpenAI believes that image generation should be a core capability of its language models, with GPT‑4o representing its most advanced image generator to date.

The new feature is available across all subscription tiers, including Plus, Pro, Team, and Free. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman noted that while this tool will unlock remarkable creativity, it may also produce controversial content. He emphasized that users will have control over the content, with the goal of preventing offensive outputs unless explicitly desired, while the company continues to monitor societal reactions.
