Gunmen kill four in attack on two Anambra communities

Four people have been confirmed dead after armed assailants, believed to be enforcing the Monday sit-at-home order, opened fire on residents and security operatives in Anambra State. The fatal attack took place on Monday in the communities of Ukpo, Dunukofia Local Government Area, and Abatete, Idemili North Local Government Area.

Eyewitnesses reported that the gunmen arrived in Abatete around 8:30 AM, opening fire on residents. They then moved to Ukpo Roundabout, where they indiscriminately shot at several people, including members of the Anambra State Vigilante Group.

The attackers also set fire to several vigilante vehicles and killed at least four of the operatives before fleeing the scene. Videos circulating on social media show the lifeless body of one vigilante operative at Ukpo Roundabout, while three others were found in a similar condition in Abatete.

One video also captured the President General of Abatete, Chimame Ezigbo, being rushed to the hospital after suffering gunshot wounds during the attack. Another vigilante member was also injured and taken for urgent medical treatment.

While the exact number of casualties is still unclear, sources confirm that at least four people were killed in the attack.

Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed that the police are investigating the incident and have deployed personnel to the affected areas. He promised to provide further updates once a full briefing is received.
