Manchester City defender Josko Gvardiol has signed a new five-year contract, extending his stay at the Premier League champions until 2031, the club announced on Tuesday.
The Croatia international, whose previous deal was due to expire in 2028, has committed his future to City for an additional three years, with the new agreement also including an option to extend for a further 12 months.
Gvardiol joined City from RB Leipzig in 2023 in a deal worth £77 million ($102 million) and has since established himself as one of the club’s key defenders. The 24-year-old has made 122 appearances, winning the Premier League title in 2024 while impressing with his versatility across central defence and left-back.
His new contract comes amid reported interest from European giants Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.
“As soon as I knew City wanted to renew my contract, I felt straight away it was what I wanted,” Gvardiol said.
“The City fans have been unbelievable with me from day one, and the club provides absolutely everything for players. It’s the best club in the world to be at.”
Gvardiol returned to action in May after spending more than four months on the sidelines with a broken leg. He later featured for Croatia during their World Cup campaign and will now look to cement his place under new City manager Enzo Maresca.
Manchester City’s director of football, Hugo Viana, hailed the defender’s impact since arriving at the Etihad Stadium.
“Josko is a player this club really believes in. He is young, an outstanding professional and already one of the best defenders in the world,” Viana said.
Gvardiol’s extension follows recent long-term contract renewals for Phil Foden and Abdukodir Khusanov as City continue to secure the futures of key members of their squad.
