Manchester United boosted their hopes of a return to the UEFA Champions League with a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Matheus Cunha scored the decisive goal just before half-time, sealing a crucial win that moves United 10 points clear of sixth-placed Chelsea with five games remaining. The top five teams in the Premier League qualify for next season’s Champions League.

The result leaves Chelsea’s hopes of returning to Europe’s elite hanging by a thread and increases pressure on manager Liam Rosenior, just months into his tenure.

United, managed on an interim basis by Michael Carrick, were forced to field a makeshift defence due to injuries and suspensions, including 19-year-old Ayden Heaven. Despite that, they produced a disciplined display to secure all three points.

Chelsea dominated early proceedings but lacked cutting edge in attack, missing injured top scorer Joao Pedro. Liam Delap led the line but struggled to convert chances.

Enzo Fernandez returned to the starting lineup after suspension and nearly opened the scoring, curling a shot narrowly wide.

United capitalised on their opportunity two minutes before the break, when Bruno Fernandes delivered a precise assist, his 18th of the season, for Cunha to finish clinically.

Chelsea frustrated

Chelsea improved after the interval but were unable to break through United’s resilient defence.

Delap came closest with a header that struck the woodwork, while Noussair Mazraoui nearly turned the ball into his own net under pressure from Wesley Fofana.

Moises Caicedo also threatened late on, but United held firm to secure a vital win.

The final whistle was met with boos from the home crowd, with Chelsea now facing the prospect of settling for UEFA Europa League qualification at best next season.
