Switzerland booked their place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup quarter-finals after defeating Colombia 4-3 on penalties following a goalless draw on Tuesday, setting up a last-eight clash with defending champions Argentina.
The evenly contested Round of 16 encounter, played in Vancouver, was the final match of the tournament to be staged outside the United States.
After 120 minutes failed to produce a goal, the tie was decided from the penalty spot. Both sides missed early spot-kicks before Switzerland goalkeeper Gregor Kobel emerged as the hero, producing a superb save to deny Cucho Hernández. Ruben Vargas then calmly converted the decisive penalty to seal the Swiss victory.
Colombia, backed by thousands of vocal supporters, entered the match having conceded just one goal in four games, while Switzerland had also built a reputation as one of the tournament’s toughest defensive sides.
The first clear chance came in the 21st minute when Kobel produced a flying save to keep out Gustavo Puerta’s curling effort from the edge of the penalty area.
Switzerland responded after the first cooling break, with Camilo Vargas parrying Fabian Rieder’s strike before denying Dan Ndoye moments later.
Despite those opportunities, neither side could find a breakthrough before half-time as two well-organised defences kept the contest finely balanced.
Switzerland began the second half brightly, but Colombia threatened on the counter, with Luis Suárez firing wastefully wide. Both managers introduced fresh legs in search of a winner, but clear-cut chances remained scarce, while Colombia’s talisman, Luis Díaz, was largely kept in check.
Ndoye came closest in stoppage time, driving a low ball across the face of goal, but no teammate was on hand to apply the finishing touch as the match headed into extra time.
The contest finally opened up in the additional 30 minutes.
Jhon Lucumí rattled the crossbar with a header from a corner before Kobel made another outstanding save to deny Jaminton Campaz as Colombia raised the intensity.
Switzerland also came close when Camilo Vargas dived to his left to push away substitute Zeki Amdouni’s effort.
Campaz squandered Colombia’s best opportunity to avoid penalties, missing a gilt-edged chance with five minutes remaining in extra time.
With neither side able to break the deadlock, the match went to a penalty shootout, where Kobel’s decisive save and Vargas’ composed finish secured Switzerland a 4-3 victory.
Switzerland will now face defending champions Argentina in Saturday’s quarter-final in Kansas City after Lionel Messi’s side edged Egypt 3-2 earlier in Atlanta.
The Swiss are through to the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time since hosting the tournament in 1954.
