Former Governor of Sokoto State, Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
In a letter dated March 11, 2026, addressed to the PDP Ward Chairman in Tambuwal/Shinfiri Ward, Tambuwal Local Government Area of Sokoto State, the former governor announced his immediate resignation from the party.
Tambuwal said his decision followed deep reflection and extensive consultations with political associates, supporters, and stakeholders.
He explained that persistent internal crises, leadership disagreements, and growing divisions within the PDP had made it increasingly difficult for him to remain in the party.
According to him, the ongoing conflicts within the PDP have weakened the unity and direction that once defined the party.
Despite his departure, Tambuwal expressed gratitude to the PDP for the opportunities it gave him to serve Nigeria in various capacities across both the legislative and executive arms of government.
Following his resignation, the former Speaker of the House of Representatives officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) alongside several of his political associates and supporters.
He said the move was guided by his conviction that Nigeria needs a stronger political platform built on integrity, accountability, inclusiveness, and a clear commitment to national development.
Tambuwal also reaffirmed his commitment to the service of Nigeria and to the ideals of democracy, justice, and national unity.
Political career
Tambuwal’s political career spans more than two decades across both legislative and executive positions.
He first rose to national prominence as a member of the House of Representatives, where he represented the Kebbe/Tambuwal Federal Constituency of Sokoto State for three consecutive terms.
During his time in the House, he was elected Speaker of the House of Representatives, a position he held from 2011 to 2015.
Tambuwal was initially elected to the House on the platform of the PDP but defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in October 2014 while still serving as Speaker.
In 2015, he contested and won the Sokoto State governorship election on the APC platform and served two terms as governor from 2015 to 2023.
However, in August 2018, he defected back to the PDP after consultations with political stakeholders and supporters in Sokoto State.
Ahead of the 2023 general elections, Tambuwal declared his intention in January 2022 to contest for the PDP presidential ticket and actively campaigned among party delegates.
During the party’s presidential primary in May 2022, however, he stepped down from the race and urged his supporters to back former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who eventually emerged as the party’s candidate.
After completing his tenure as governor in 2023, Tambuwal returned to the National Assembly after winning election as the Senator representing Sokoto South Senatorial District under the PDP.
