The governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, has paid the medical bills of a pregnant woman and her husband, who is receiving treatment for severe burns sustained in a fire incident.

In a statement on Sunday, the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Patrick Ebojele, said Okpebholo intervened during a visit to Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, where he also settled the medical expenses of several other patients admitted across different wards.

Speaking with journalists after the visit, Okpebholo said the woman had initially approached him seeking financial assistance for her husband’s treatment.

“The woman came to seek help for her husband because they were looking for money to pay his bills. When my doctors saw her and realised she was due, they immediately rushed her to the hospital, where she later delivered safely through a caesarean section,” he said.

The governor added that his administration had also agreed with the hospital management to cover the medical bills of other patients encountered during the visit.

“We have agreed with the hospital management to pay the bills of other patients we met in the wards as well. They have no reason to worry about payments. With this support, their treatment can continue and, by the grace of God, we believe the man and others in the ICU will recover quickly,” he said.

Okpebholo said the gesture reflects his administration’s commitment to supporting residents of Edo State, particularly those facing medical emergencies and financial hardship.

Patients and their relatives who benefited from the intervention expressed gratitude, describing the assistance as a timely relief from the burden of rising hospital bills.
