The Kano State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Waiya, has advised the Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, to resign from office following his decision not to defect alongside Governor Abba Yusuf to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Waiya, who spoke to journalists in Kano on Thursday, said effective governance is founded on loyalty, trust, and shared political vision, arguing that a deputy governor who does not align with the governor’s political direction cannot continue to participate meaningfully in executive decision-making.
“This is his personal decision, but there is no way someone who is no longer with you should continue to sit in routine council meetings,” the commissioner said.
“Who knows with whom he may share sensitive government information? Governance is built on trust, and you cannot fully trust someone who is no longer on the same page with you.”
According to Waiya, stepping aside would be the most honourable option available to the deputy governor under the circumstances.
“If I were in his position, I would humbly resign,” he added.
The commissioner’s remarks come amid ongoing political realignments in Kano State, following Governor Yusuf’s recent defection from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the APC.
Waiya described the governor’s defection as being in the best interest of the state, noting that closer alignment with the Federal Government would open the door to increased development projects and federal interventions.
He also assured residents that the state government is taking concrete steps to resolve the lingering emirate dispute, stressing that dialogue, respect for the rule of law, and the maintenance of peace and stability remain top priorities.
“The administration is determined to ensure that political differences do not disrupt governance or undermine the collective interests of the people of Kano State,” Waiya said.
