The National Grid suffered its second collapse of 2026 on Tuesday, resulting in a nationwide power outage.
Data obtained at the time of filing this report showed zero megawatts of electricity supply to all 11 electricity distribution companies (DisCos).
This latest incident comes just days after the grid’s first collapse of the year last Friday, and barely weeks after a similar system failure on December 29, 2025, which plunged large parts of the country into darkness.
Electricity generation reportedly fell sharply from over 4,500 megawatts to zero megawatts by about 11:00 a.m., as all 23 power generation plants connected to the national grid lost output during the incident.
Consequently, no power allocation was made to any of the 11 DisCos nationwide.
Grid collapses have often been linked to a combination of technical faults, inadequate maintenance of transmission infrastructure, and fluctuations in generation capacity.
As of the time of filing this report, the exact cause of the latest collapse had yet to be determined, and the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) had not issued a detailed statement.
However, officials confirmed that recovery efforts were underway.
