Burna Boy to headline AFCON 2025 fan zone finale

Grammy Award-winning Nigerian musician Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, will headline the finale of the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 Fan Zone concert in Rabat, Morocco.

The announcement was confirmed by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in a post on X, revealing a star-studded line-up for the closing concert.

“Burna Boy, Stormzy, Stonebwoy, and Jaylann live on January 16. The #TotalEnergiesAFCON2025 Fan Zone Concerts finale,” CAF said.

Dubbed “The AFCON Last Dance,” the concert will take place on Friday, January 16, 2026, at the OLM Souissi Fan Zone in Rabat, with performances starting at 8:00 p.m. local time.

AFCON 2025, which kicked off on December 21, 2025, has featured music prominently throughout the tournament as part of CAF’s broader fan engagement strategy.

The opening ceremony in Rabat showcased Nigerian superstar Davido, alongside French Montana and RedOne, with a performance titled Le Show staged ahead of Morocco’s opening match against Comoros at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.

CAF said Davido’s inclusion reflected his global influence, describing him as an artiste whose Afrobeats sound embodies “celebration, confidence and continental pride,” qualities it said mirror the spirit of the Africa Cup of Nations.

The Fan Zone finale comes just days after Morocco eliminated Nigeria from the tournament. The hosts defeated the Super Eagles 4–2 on penalties after a goalless 120 minutes in their semi-final clash in Rabat on Wednesday night.

Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali saved one penalty, but misses from Samuel Chukwueze and Bruno Onyemaechi proved costly, with Youssef En-Nesyri converting the winning kick.

Nigeria will face Egypt in the third-place match on Saturday, January 17, at the Mohammed V Stadium, with kick-off scheduled for 11:00 a.m. ET.

Morocco will take on Senegal in the final on Sunday, January 18, at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, as the Atlas Lions chase their first AFCON title since 1976.

Global rise of Nigerian artistes

Nigerian artistes have increasingly featured at major international sporting and cultural events, underlining the global rise of Afrobeats.

Stars such as Wizkid, Rema, Tiwa Savage, CKay, and Patoranking have all performed on prominent global stages in recent years.

In July 2023, Wizkid became the first African artiste to headline Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, performing to about 45,000 fans. A month earlier, he had also made history as the first African musician to headline the Glastonbury Festival.

Tiwa Savage, meanwhile, was the only Nigerian artiste invited to perform at the coronation concert of King Charles III in 2023.

Rema further cemented Nigeria’s growing global influence when he performed his global hit “Calm Down” at the Ballon d’Or ceremony in France in October 2023, becoming the first Nigerian artiste to perform at the prestigious football awards event.
