Tight security at NASS ahead of Tinubu’s ₦54.4trn 2026 budget presentation

President Bola Tinubu
Security has been tightened around the National Assembly Complex ahead of the presentation of the 2026 Appropriation Bill by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to a joint session of the National Assembly.

In a letter to both chambers, the President requested that the bill be scheduled for presentation at noon on Friday before the joint sitting.

According to the 2026–2028 Medium-Term Expenditure Framework and Fiscal Strategy Paper (MTEF/FSP) earlier approved by lawmakers, the proposed budget is pegged at ₦54.46 trillion, with ₦34.33 trillion projected as retained revenue.

Commercial activities within and around the National Assembly complex were largely shut down, as business operators and ancillary service providers including banks and food vendors were directed by the complex’s management not to open for the day.

Correspondents observed heavy security deployment at all entry points, with operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police Force, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) manning the gates.

Access to the complex was restricted to essential staff, accredited officials, and a limited number of journalists.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio is expected to preside over the joint session alongside the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen.

The presentation will be President Tinubu’s third budget proposal to the National Assembly since he assumed office on May 29, 2023.

The President is expected to arrive at the National Assembly complex at about 3 p.m.
