The Commander of the Osun Amotekun Corps, Adekunle Omoyele, narrowly escaped an assassination attempt following an ambush by gunmen in Osogbo on Monday night.

This was disclosed in a statement by the Corps spokesperson, Mr. Abass Yusuf, which was made available to newsmen on Tuesday in Osogbo.

According to Yusuf, the ambush occurred at approximately 10:05 p.m. on Ikirun Road, opposite Charity Hotel. Omoyele was driving home alone after official duties when unknown assailants opened fire, riddling his vehicle with bullets.

“It is deeply troubling that the Amotekun commander was targeted in such a coordinated and vicious attack,” Yusuf said.

He added that, in a related incident the same day, about 15 masked armed men reportedly stormed Omoyele’s private residence. Witnesses stated the attackers arrived in a Hilux van and a Toyota Highlander SUV.

The spokesperson expressed concern that the attack on a top-ranking security official underscores the growing insecurity faced by those charged with protecting the state’s citizens.

“The corps urges the public to remain calm and report any suspicious activities to local security agencies for prompt action,” Yusuf emphasized. “This attack is not just against one individual, but against the symbol of our localized security structure.”

Omoyele sustained gunshot injuries and is currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed medical facility under heavy protection.

The case has been reported to the Ota-Efun Police Division, where investigations are ongoing.

Separately, The Telegraph reported that Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has ordered a full investigation into the recent killing of residents in Akinlalu Community by operatives of the Amotekun Corps. The governor has dispatched a top-level delegation to the affected area to ascertain the facts surrounding the incident.
