Anambra assembly suspends lawmaker over social media posts

Bernard Udemezue
The Anambra State House of Assembly has suspended the member representing Ayamelum Constituency, Bernard Udemezue, for three months over what it described as a “damaging” social media post.

Udemezue, who was elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), had accused the Assembly of marginalising his constituency in the allocation of constituency allowances. He made the allegation public via his social media handles.

In response, the House viewed the post as a breach of legislative decorum and moved swiftly to address the matter.

During its plenary last Tuesday, the House passed a resolution summoning Udemezue, following a motion of urgent public importance moved by Tony Muobike, member representing Aguata 2 Constituency, and seconded by Chief Whip Jude Ngobili, who represents Ihiala 1 Constituency.

Speaker Somtochukwu Udeze, who presided over the session, referred the issue to the House Committee on Rules, Business, Ethics, and Privileges for investigation and recommendations.

At its plenary session on Tuesday (today), the House adopted the committee’s recommendations and passed a resolution suspending Udemezue from legislative activities for a period of three months.
