The Federal Ministry of Education has announced that the University of Maiduguri has been renamed Muhammadu Buhari University of Maiduguri, in honor of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, in recognition of his “unwavering commitment to education.”
This was disclosed in a statement on Friday by Folasade Boriowo, Director of Press at the Ministry. According to the statement, President Bola Tinubu approved the renaming during a special session of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) held to pay tribute to Buhari.
During the session, President Tinubu praised Buhari as a statesman who prioritized national security, economic recovery, institutional reform, and anti-corruption during his tenure. He emphasized Buhari’s impact on nation-building and his legacy of public service.
Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, expressed the ministry’s appreciation for the president’s decision, calling it a “statesmanlike gesture” that reflects Tinubu’s belief in education as a foundation for national development.
“This symbolic gesture honors Buhari’s legacy, particularly his contributions to human capital development through initiatives such as the Anchor Borrowers’ Programme, the Treasury Single Account, the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan, and various social investment schemes,” the statement noted.
Yusuf Buhari, son of the late president, delivered a response on behalf of the Buhari family during the FEC session, which was also attended by the Senate President, House Speaker, governors, ministers, and other senior government officials.
The Ministry described the renaming as a significant tribute to Buhari’s values of service, integrity, and excellence, and reaffirmed its commitment to advancing education in line with both Buhari and Tinubu’s visions for national renewal.
