The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a three-day weather forecast, warning of widespread thunderstorms and rainfall across several parts of the country from Monday, July 7 to Wednesday, July 10, 2025.
According to the forecast released on the agency’s official website, both northern and southern regions should prepare for stormy weather conditions, with moderate to heavy rainfall and potential disruptions due to strong winds and lightning.
Central region
In the Central region, NiMet predicts cloudy to partly cloudy mornings throughout the forecast period, followed by scattered thunderstorms later in the day. On Monday, cloudy skies with intervals of sunshine are expected over the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nasarawa, and Niger states, with localised thunderstorms and moderate rainfall anticipated in the afternoon and evening.
Tuesday will bring similar conditions, with cloudy skies in the morning and a chance of light rain and thunderstorms over parts of the FCT, Nasarawa, and Niger. These conditions are expected to intensify as the day progresses, with localised thunderstorms and moderate rainfall likely during the afternoon and evening hours.
On Wednesday, the region will experience cloudy skies with sunny intervals in the morning. Thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall are forecast over most parts of the region in the afternoon through to the evening and night.
Northern region
In the North, thunderstorms are expected on Monday morning in parts of Taraba, Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, Bauchi, Borno, Kebbi, and Kaduna states. Later in the day, isolated thunderstorms and rainfall will likely affect Adamawa, Taraba, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Zamfara, Kebbi, Gombe, Borno, Yobe, Bauchi, and Kaduna.
Tuesday will begin with sunny skies and patches of cloud across most of the North, but thunderstorms and moderate rainfall are forecast to develop across the region later in the day. On Wednesday, thunderstorms are expected in the morning over Sokoto, Kebbi, Katsina, Kaduna, and Taraba, with additional storms likely to spread throughout the North by afternoon and evening.
Southern region
In the South, cloudy conditions are expected on Monday morning over states such as Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, Anambra, Enugu, Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Rivers. By the afternoon, moderate showers are expected to extend to most southern states, including Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Imo, Ebonyi, Enugu, Anambra, Abia, Edo, Delta, Rivers, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom.
On Tuesday, early morning rainfall is likely in Abia, Ebonyi, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Rivers, and Bayelsa. This will be followed by widespread moderate rainfall across the region later in the day.
Wednesday will follow a similar pattern, with cloudy skies expected in the morning over Delta, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Cross River, and Bayelsa, and moderate to heavy rainfall anticipated across much of the region in the afternoon and evening.
NiMet has urged residents to remain vigilant, particularly in areas susceptible to flooding and strong winds. The agency cautioned that gusty winds may precede thunderstorms and could cause property damage, falling trees, or downed power lines.
The public is advised to avoid seeking shelter under tall trees during storms to reduce the risk of injury from falling branches or lightning strikes.
