Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has appointed Super Eagles and Udinese goalkeeper, Maduka Okoye, as an ambassador of the state.

Okoye, who hails from Enugu, is currently visiting home after a long Serie A season, where he helped Udinese finish 12th. During his visit, he met with Governor Mbah and shared plans to launch a charitable foundation and establish a football academy in the state.

In a post on his official X handle, Governor Mbah praised Okoye’s commitment to giving back, writing: “Maduka is not just making us proud on the global stage — he’s also poised to give back. In recognition of his achievements and vision, I’m proud to appoint him as an Ambassador of Enugu State. He will inspire the next generation of talents, especially in our Smart Green Schools.”

The governor pledged to provide land for the proposed academy and invited Okoye to participate in the next Enugu International Marathon.

Okoye expressed gratitude and excitement about the appointment and returning to his roots:

“I’m truly excited to be back home. Enugu is my origin and I carry it with pride everywhere I go. Through a foundation and football academy, I hope to give back, inspire young talents, and nurture future stars.”
