Leicester City were relegated from the Premier League on Sunday as Trent Alexander-Arnold’s late strike earned Liverpool a 1–0 victory at the King Power Stadium, moving the Reds to within one win of a record-equalling 20th English top-flight title.
The decisive moment came 14 minutes from time when Alexander-Arnold, returning from a five-week injury absence, scored his 23rd—and potentially final—goal for the club. The win keeps Liverpool firmly on track to be crowned champions under Arne Slot in his first season in charge.
The Reds could clinch the title as early as Wednesday if Arsenal fail to beat Crystal Palace at the Emirates. If Mikel Arteta’s side avoid defeat, Liverpool will still have the opportunity to seal the title next Sunday when they host Tottenham at Anfield.
Foxes fall after woeful home run
For Leicester, the loss confirmed a dismal return to the Premier League. After just one season back in the top flight, the Foxes are heading straight back to the Championship.
Sunday’s result marked their ninth consecutive home defeat, and incredibly, they have now gone over four months without scoring a goal at the King Power Stadium. The barren run under manager Ruud van Nistelrooy proved too much to overcome.
Leicester’s best chance to end their goal drought came from Wilfred Ndidi, whose low drive struck the post. They briefly thought they had broken the deadlock when Conor Coady headed into an empty net, but the goal was rightly disallowed for a foul by Patson Daka on Alisson Becker in the build-up.
Liverpool leave it late
Liverpool started brightly and could have been ahead within two minutes, but Mohamed Salah’s curling effort struck both posts in a stunning near-miss.
Despite a strong first-half display, the visitors lacked cutting edge in front of goal. Ibrahima Konaté had a goal-bound header cleared off the line by Ndidi, while Kostas Tsimikas failed to beat Mads Hermansen when clean through early in the second half.
Slot turned to Alexander-Arnold with 20 minutes remaining, and the right-back delivered just five minutes later. After a chaotic corner in which Salah and Diogo Jota both struck the woodwork from close range, the ball fell kindly to Alexander-Arnold. His low shot squirmed under Hermansen and sent the away fans into raptures.
The 25-year-old ripped off his shirt in celebration, possibly marking his final Premier League goal for the club amid reports of a free transfer move to Real Madrid this summer. While Salah and captain Virgil van Dijk have signed new contracts, Alexander-Arnold’s future remains uncertain.
Leicester’s last gasp falls short
Leicester had one final chance to salvage a point, but substitute Facundo Buonanotte wasted a golden opportunity, firing straight at Alisson with only the keeper to beat.
Just nine years after their remarkable Premier League title win, the Foxes’ fall from grace is complete. Having stormed to the Championship title last season, the step back up proved a bridge too far.
They now join Southampton—who were relegated in record time with seven games to spare—as the second team confirmed to go down. Ipswich, who are 15 points adrift with five games remaining, are almost certain to follow, marking the second consecutive season in which all three promoted clubs have been relegated.
