The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Kaduna State University has suspended the strike action it began just a few days ago.
On Tuesday, the union had embarked on an indefinite strike to address unresolved issues with the university’s management, which date back to 2009 and 2017.
However, the strike was called off on Sunday following the intervention of Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani.
In a statement, Dr. Peter Adamu, Chairman of the ASUU Kaduna State University branch, praised the state government’s efforts to resolve the standoff. He highlighted that the government demonstrated goodwill by immediately releasing funds to pay 60 percent of the withheld September 2017 salaries, as well as the SIWES supervision allowance for dive sessions.
Furthermore, Dr. Adamu stated that the Kaduna State Government has committed to a clear timeline for the payment of withheld salaries from May to September 2022, as well as promotion arrears, earned academic allowances, pension remittances from 2009 to 2019, death benefits, and group life assurance.
The government has also shown its commitment to implementing a wage award and granting greater autonomy to Kaduna State University, according to ASUU.
In light of these developments, the union expressed its appreciation to Governor Sani for his swift and decisive leadership in resolving the issues that led to the strike. ASUU noted that the Governor’s intervention marks a positive departure from past practices, where members were often victimized for participating in lawful strike actions.
