NAF investigates civilian deaths in accidental Zamfara airstrike

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has launched an investigation into allegations of accidental civilian casualties during an airstrike in the Zurmi Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

The incident took place on Friday as part of Operation Fansan Yamma, a military operation targeting bandits terrorizing the region. Following the operation, reports surfaced suggesting that 16 civilians, including members of the Zamfara Community Protection Guard and local vigilantes, were inadvertently killed in the airstrike.

Earlier, the NAF had issued a statement touting the operation’s success, claiming the elimination of key allies of notorious terrorist leader Bello Turji and the rescue of kidnapped victims. However, the statement did not address the allegations of civilian casualties.

Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal responded to the incident on Sunday, confirming that some members of the Civilian Joint Task Force and local vigilantes had lost their lives in the airstrike.

Later that day, NAF spokesperson Air Vice Marshal Olusola Akinboyewa acknowledged the effectiveness of the operation, which successfully targeted bandits, but expressed deep concern over reports of civilian deaths.

“The Nigerian Air Force’s recent airstrikes in Tungar Kara, Zurmi Local Government Area, dealt a decisive blow to bandits terrorizing local communities. While the operation successfully neutralized several bandits and facilitated the recovery of kidnapped victims, we are deeply concerned by reports of civilian casualties,” Akinboyewa said in a statement.

He assured that the NAF had launched a thorough investigation to verify the allegations and promised that the results would be shared with the public.

“As a professional and responsible custodian of airpower, the NAF places the utmost value on the lives of all Nigerians. We are committed to thoroughly investigating these reports, and the findings will be communicated transparently to the public,” he added.

Akinboyewa reiterated the Air Force’s dedication to protecting civilians, combating banditry, and restoring peace in the North West.

“Our mission in the North-West remains focused on combating banditry and restoring peace. The safety and well-being of all Nigerians are paramount. We will continue working closely with all relevant authorities to fully understand the facts and take appropriate actions to prevent, minimize, and mitigate harm to civilians and civilian infrastructure during our operations,” he stated.
