The Emir of Gumel in Jigawa State, Alhaji Dr Ahmed Muhammad Sani II, CON, has died after nearly 46 years on the throne.
Former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof Isa Ali Pantami, announced the monarch’s death in a condolence message issued on Thursday.
According to Pantami, the emir died in Cairo, Egypt, on Thursday, September 3, 2026.
Sani II ascended the throne on December 16, 1980, and remained the Emir of Gumel until his death.
Describing the late monarch as a distinguished scholar, a beacon of wisdom and a father to all, Pantami said Sani II devoted his life to the service of his people, the promotion of peace and education, and the preservation of cultural values.
Pantami extended his condolences to the emir’s immediate family, the Gumel Emirate Council, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, CFR, the Government and people of Jigawa State, and Nigerians.
“On behalf of myself and my family, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the immediate family of the late Emir, the Gumel Emirate Council, His Eminence the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, CFR, the Government and good people of Jigawa State, and the entire nation,” he said.
He prayed for the repose of the monarch’s soul and asked God to grant the deceased’s family, the people of Gumel and the entire Jigawa State the strength to bear the loss.
Sani II’s death marks the end of a long reign that spanned more than four decades and saw him preside over the affairs of the historic Gumel Emirate.
