The first batch of Nigerians being repatriated from South Africa following the recent wave of xenophobic attacks is expected to arrive at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, in the early hours of Thursday.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Tuesday by the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa.
According to the ministry, the returnees will be airlifted by Air Peace, with the evacuation flight scheduled to depart O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg on Wednesday night.
The airline is expected to arrive in Lagos at approximately 5:00 a.m. on Thursday, bringing home the first group of Nigerians who opted for voluntary repatriation amid growing concerns over the attacks.
The evacuation follows reports of xenophobic violence targeting foreign nationals in parts of South Africa, prompting the Nigerian government to activate measures to facilitate the safe return of affected citizens.
The Federal Government had earlier reassured Nigerians residing in South Africa of its commitment to their safety and welfare, while engaging relevant authorities to address the situation and protect lives and property.
