Barcelona have confirmed the signing of Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United in a deal worth up to €80 million ($93 million).
The English winger has signed a contract running for “the next five seasons, until June 30, 2031,” the La Liga champions said in a brief statement on Friday.
The 25-year-old joins after an impressive campaign in which he scored 17 goals for Newcastle, including 10 in the Champions League, finishing as the club’s top scorer.
Gordon, who is part of England’s World Cup squad, is expected to strengthen Barcelona’s attack following the impending departure of veteran striker Robert Lewandowski at the end of his contract, as well as the possible exit of Marcus Rashford after his loan spell from Manchester United.
Despite their status as La Liga champions, Barcelona are expected to remain active in the transfer market, with Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez reportedly among their targets. The club has also not ruled out extending Rashford’s stay.
After several seasons of tightened spending, Barcelona now have increased financial flexibility under La Liga’s financial fair play regulations, boosted by the partial reopening of their renovated Camp Nou stadium.
Lewandowski’s departure, combined with uncertainty over Rashford’s future, is expected to free up further space for new signings. Players such as Roony Bardghji, Ansu Fati and Marc-André ter Stegen have also been linked with potential exits.
Gordon’s move represents Newcastle’s second-biggest sale in their history, behind the £125 million ($168 million) departure of Alexander Isak to Liverpool last summer.
Newcastle are reportedly considering a move for Real Betis winger Ez Abde as a replacement.
Gordon originally joined Newcastle from Everton in 2023 for £45 million, with Everton entitled to 15 per cent of any profit from his departure.
