The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka chapter, on Monday commenced an indefinite strike over the non-payment of the full August 2026 salary to its members.
The union announced the action in a statement jointly signed by the chairperson of the ASUU-UNIZIK chapter, Innocent Nnubia, and the secretary, Osita Nnajiofor, and released to journalists on Monday.
According to the union, its decision to withdraw academic and administrative services was in compliance with the standing resolution of the ASUU National Executive Council on the non-payment of salaries.
The union said the resolution empowers its branches to withdraw their services when salaries remain unpaid after the third day of the following month.
“Today is 7th September 2026 and the University has not paid complete salary for the month of August to our members,” the statement said.
ASUU-UNIZIK said the development marked more than the third time its members had experienced what it described as an “ugly and frustrating” delay or shortfall in salary payments.
It said the strike was solely over the non-payment of the full August 2026 salary and urged the university authorities and the Visitor, President Bola Tinubu, to urgently intervene.
The union called for the immediate payment of the outstanding portion of the August salary and measures to prevent a recurrence.
The statement said the congress resolution directed all members to immediately withdraw their academic and administrative services.
“The withdrawal of services shall subsist until the complete payment of August 2026 salary to all members,” the union said.
The development is expected to affect academic and administrative activities at the university until the salary issue is resolved.
When contacted for a reaction, the Director of Information and Public Relations of UNIZIK, Aloysius Attah, declined to comment on the development, simply saying, “No comment.”
