The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has temporarily suspended operations of the Warri–Itakpe Train Service (WITS).
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Corporation said the suspension followed operational exigencies and technical recommendations from its engineers.
It explained that the decision was necessary to allow for critical assessments aimed at ensuring the continued safety, reliability, and improved service delivery along the corridor.
“The temporary suspension has become necessary to enable the Corporation carry out critical operational assessments aimed at ensuring continued safety, reliability, and improved service delivery on the corridor,” the statement read.
The NRC expressed regret over the inconvenience the development may cause passengers and stakeholders, assuring that efforts are ongoing to resolve the issues and restore services as quickly as possible.
It added that passengers and intending travellers would be informed before the end of the week on the resumption date for normal operations, reaffirming its commitment to safe, efficient, and customer-focused rail services nationwide.
The suspension comes shortly after the Federal Government announced a 50 per cent reduction in train fares for Sallah celebrations.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Transportation, Funsho Adebiyi.
According to the ministry, the fare reduction was part of efforts to ease transportation costs for Nigerians travelling during the festive period.
