Defending champions Bayern Munich were held to a 0-0 draw by promoted Schalke in the Bundesliga on Saturday, ending their 67-matchday run at the top of the table.
The stalemate was Bayern’s first scoreless draw since February 2025 and brought an end to their remarkable run of consecutive matchdays leading the Bundesliga.
Seven-time German champions Schalke had not beaten Bayern since 2011 and had failed to take a point from the Bavarian giants in nine years, suffering 12 consecutive defeats in the fixture.
With Harry Kane and Michael Olise starting on the bench, Bayern dominated possession but struggled to create clear-cut opportunities as a disciplined Schalke side dug in to claim their first point of the season.
Luis Diaz had a golden opportunity in the 54th minute when he raced through on advancing goalkeeper Loris Karius, but his attempted chip lacked the required power and was cleared off the line by Robin Gosens.
Bayern’s best chance came late in the game when Kane unleashed a long-range effort, only for Karius to produce an excellent save, leaping high to palm the ball away.
Karius, the former Liverpool goalkeeper, was instrumental in preserving Schalke’s clean sheet as the hosts frustrated the champions throughout.
At the other end, Bayern captain Manuel Neuer was loudly booed whenever he touched the ball on his return to the club where he began his professional career.
The 40-year-old goalkeeper is expected to retire at the end of the season, making Saturday’s visit to Gelsenkirchen likely to be his final appearance at his former home.
